"Plot Synopsis: The movie will focus on an academic researcher who opens a portal into a parallel universe and makes contact with his double in order to stop an apocalypse foreseen by the ancient Mayans."

"Based on the book of the same name." Which one would that be??? (Pinchbeck's?)

Anyone know more about this flick? This site gives an estimated release date is 2009.

Alex Kurtzman, who also wrote scripts for "Xena: The Warrior Princess" is writing the screenplay:

I guess it's nice that the hero of the story will be "an academic researcher", but will he be a good scientist? ; - )

      The way I'd write it:

One "twin" (in this universe) would be the skeptical, rational, empirical lef-brained scientific researcher. The "twin" he discovers (in the parallel universe) would be a non-rational, spiritual, paranormal, right-brained mystical seeker. They would both have to work together to perform the required heroics, in the process revealing that they are not two separate individuals but one.

      Think it would work?

Part of story of the Hero Twins is a metaphorical account of their defeat of the sources of disease (the Lords of Xibalba). Hence, a plot subtext could be a synthesis of the methods of both scientific medicine and metaphysical alternative medicine in the diagnosis and healing of both the physical and the metaphysical illnesses of the world.

I wish I could find the time to write this novel!

I like that! The twins argue and quarrel a lot, but underneath they really love each other, and in order to save the world, they have to learn to work together.

          my .02 fiction.
The "science" twin has been genetically modifying corn, but with no real guidance and disastrous results on his world. The mystic twin has developed a deep spiritual relationship with the corn, and it is dying on his world. In a vision the corn transmits to him arcane symbols he doesn't understand, and isn't until he meets his science Twin that they realize it is the key genetic modification needed to save the species on both planets. They each must understand the thinking of the other to synthesize this vital information. The new "corn" has properties which revolutionize food, medicine, and spiritual growth.....
          Anyway.. great concept.. ;-)

folks, it's directed by Michael "Cocaine-Prodcutions" Bay. Let's get a reality check here, please.
Quite a sure sign that this movie is going to suck ass in typical fake hollywood, cheese, blockbuster, testosterone/adrenaline pumping fashion.

There are only two directors in the world who would have done this topic justice with artistic integrity, depth and spiritual insight.......unfortunately both are not around anymore:
Andrei Tarkovsky or Stanley Kubrick..........can't think of anyone else.

Somewhere in the milky way galaxy a great metamorphosis is about to take place. The fate of a planet hangs in the balance. The few who have awoken lead the way, giving hope while an alien race waits patiently. What will happen on that day...Dec 23, 2012...only time will tell.

The twins could have a whole series of adventures, in each of which they are faced with some crisis and argue about how to handle it, and each time end up realizing that in order to solve the crisis at hand they need each other, and each time realize anew they are each incomplete without the other.

For a second I thought you were talking about the twin towers. That would be awesome, having a sitcom about 9/11.............I can't wait to see the episode where they find the passport of one of the "terrorists" in the rubble of the towers..........probably the best channel for that show would be the comedy channel.

I'm more like the fusion of the two twins, that they transform into when they realize that they are just two sides of the same thing. I guess that could be a third character, what the twins turn into every week when they discover that is the only solution to their latest wacky adventure.

                      Okay, here's another one:

A guy goes on his first ayahuasca journey in the Amazon rainforest. After he’s drunk the brew and vomited a few times, he has an intense vision of a fantastically twisted flask made of multicolored glass. It contains a midnight blue liquid within which flash brilliant stars.

The next day, he describes what he saw in complete detaill to his shaman guide and asks him what it means.

“Can’t say,” the shaman replies. “Usually vision is a serpent.”

The following night, he drinks more ayahuasca. There’s less nausea and vomiting, but the hallucinations are even more intense. He sees an enormous crystalline flagon with a long neck that loops around itself in complex coils. It is filled with a metallic liquid like mercury that flashes with flames the color of gold and blood.

The following morning, he explains what he saw down to the last detail and asks the shaman what it means.

“Don’t know,” the shaman says, shaking his head. “Usually it is snake.”

The third and last night of the expedition, he takes another bellyful of brew. This time he manages to hold it all without vomiting. The visions are even more amazing than the ones he had the night before. This time, he sees an enormous emerald green decanter with a sinuous shape, wrapping around itself multiple times in impossible curves. It contains a bubbling, pearlescent liquid that glows like supercharged neon.

In the morning, he goes to the shaman to describe his vision, again carefully explaining every last detail of what he saw.

“Ah!” the shaman exclaims with sudden insight. “The return of pretzel bottle!”

Another Movie About the 2012 Apocalypse -- This One is for the Kiddies
Posted May 17th 2007 6:02PM by Christopher Campbell
Filed under: Action & Adventure, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Paramount, Family Films, Religious

In about five-and-a-half years, the world will supposedly end. Don't worry, though, because it will be a lot of fun. That is the impression I get from Nickelodeon Films, anyway. The kid-friendly division of Paramount is making an action-adventure for the whole family that is based on the idea that the apocalypse is coming in December of 2012. Called simply 2012, the movie will be about a family vacation during that fateful month when, according to the Mayan calendar, and some UFO theorists, something devastating is expected to take place. 2012 will be written by Tom Astle and Matt Ember, and it will probably be directed by Tom Dey -- all three of whom were responsible for Failure to Launch.

This is the second movie we've heard about so far that has to do with the Mayan doomsday prediction. The first is an adaptation of Whitley Streiber's upcoming book 2012: The War for Souls, which Michael Bay is making for Warner Bros. Though Nickelodeon's 2012 should be much lighter in tone, I have to assume that the whole premise will still be a bit scary for the intended audience -- unless kids these days just aren't afraid of the end of the world as much as I was (and honestly still am). According to Variety, those involved with 2012 have some time before they'll be able to get started on the movie. Currently, Astle and Ember are writing the direct-to-video spin-off Get Smarter: Bruce and Lloyd Out of Control and reportedly Dey is expected to be committing to other projects ahead of this one. The trio better not take too long, though, because they're running out of time. In only six years, either the movie will lose all relevance, or we won't be around to see it.

He's got a long history with the issue of global climate change, having co-authored the book that inspired the movie "The Day After Tomorrow".

What's particularly intriguing re the Streiber/Pinchbeck scuffle is that Streiber was once a devotee of G.I. Gurdjieff, while Pinchbeck sees himself as an intellectual disciple of Rudolf Steiner. It's not surprising to me that each of them is fairly gullible when it comes to pseudoscience.

Christopher Walken was cast to play him in "Communion".

Story Details for Roland Emmerich's 2012!
      www.latinoreview.com/news/st...012-4921

"So here we have 2012, the latest magnum opus from disaster enthusiast Roland Emmerich. Hot on the heals of the disappointing prehistoric epic 10,000 BC, 2012 is a return to what Emmerich ostensibly does best – mass destruction. The hook this time around is the apocalypse itself; more specifically, the year of the title, which marks the end of the Mayan calendar and which many believe will be the end of the world. With the date rapidly approaching, the 2012 apocalypse theory has been a bit of a hot topic in recent years, and there has been rampant speculation been several books written on the subject. Mr. Emmerich likely saw in the theory a concept ripe for use in a big budget disaster movie. After all, the actual end of the world as we know it would surely make for the disaster movie to end all disaster movies. So does it actually live up to the promise of the concept?"

At the end of the teaser, it simply says "Google 2012". We know what *that's* going to turn up, and propel into mainstream consciousness.

      www.google.com/search

What a way to infect millions with the meme (and all that goes with it).

The best products (and ideas) literally sell/spread themselves without paid advertising.
Word of mouth, unpaid testimonials, gossip, all of this spreads at an ever quickening pace.
        Thanks Internet.

Products (and ideas) that 'need' the largest advertising budget/campaign may be doomed.
especially if they can not adjust and truely come up with an actual 'new and improved version'.

"The best products (and ideas) literally sell/spread themselves without paid advertising. "

If you're going to judge whether they're "best" or not based on how well they sell/spread themselves, you're not only creating a circular argument, but you'll wind up with a lot of dreck. Quality is not a popularity contest. It's often exactly the opposite. There are plenty of popular ideas that "sold themselves". Slavery might be one, for example. Anti-Semitism is another.

The best food, like the best ideas, is not always what sells itself the best.

Sometimes the best idea is what most people try hardest to avoid.

well in fact Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene (1976) notes:

“Memeticists argue that the memes most beneficial to their hosts will not necessarily survive; rather, those memes that replicate the most effectively spread best, which allows for the possibility that successful memes may prove detrimental to their hosts.”

No. I'm not going to judge. No. I'm not creating a argument. No. I have not wound up with a lot of dreck.

best products are based on being good, spreading is a by product. there is little or no difference between the best and worst dreck,
good dreck is unwanted, discarded quickly, not saved nor cherished. requires paid advertising to spread at all.

a self-evident proposition is one that is known to be true by understanding its meaning without proof or reason.
It is self-evident that slavery is a bad idea. People treated as slaves don't naturally sell themselves.

The point was the difference between what is solicited and what is unsolicited.

"Quality is not a popularity contest."

Unless it is made to be one. And that would be a good idea. A better idea. One of the best ideas.
            Spread it around.
